This 14 Day Eastern Circle is a fantastic tour that covers all of the most important and interesting parts of the east of South Africa. The 14 Day Eastern Circle starts in Johannesburg and continues through the fantastic scenery of the Panorama Route, where you will enjoy great views of the Blyde River Canyon and Gods Window. You will then get to visit Africa`s premiere National Park, Kruger. You will have 5 nights in Kruger which is fantastic and you are sure to experience many great wildlife sightings. The safari then moves to Zululand where you will visit the stunning Hluhluwe National Park where animals and scenery combine for a great experience, after this you will move to the warm Indian Ocean on the north coast of Durban for a few days relaxation. The Safari finishes in The Drakensberg Mountains, Southern Africa`s longest Mountain Range where you will enjoy long hikes in the fresh Africa air.

Day 1 Johannesburg to Blyde River Canyon via the Panorama Route.

Today you will be arriving in South Africa via O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg. We will be at the airport to meet you and welcome you. From the airport we will go straight to the first stage of your exciting adventure. This will be the beautiful scenic route aptly named the Panorama Route. Our first stop will be the Heritage Site of Pilgrims Rest the site of a South African Gold Rush in the mid 19 century. Here you will have a chance to learn some of the history and take a stroll through time on the street of uptown.

We will then move over to the quaint town of Graskop for an own expense lunch before we take you to see the stunning views from God`s Window. We will then visit the watefalls Berlin and Lisbon. The last stop for the day will be the 3 Rondawels view point on the edge of the worlds 3rd largest canyon, the Blyde River Canyon. The views from here are truly spectacular and tonight we will be staying on the top of the canyon at Forever Resorts.

You will be sleeping in a 2 sleeper chalet with twin beds, en suite bathroom and a small kitchenette.

Dinner will be served at your chalet.

Day 2 Kruger National Park. (Letaba Rest Camp)

This morning we will enjoy breakfast at the resort and then depart for Kruger National Park. Kruger is South Africa`s premiere national park and is home to all the flagship species of animals found in Africa as well as the endangered animals the park strives to protect.

We will travel north towards Zimbabwe on our way to Phalaborwa, a small mining town bordering Kruger National Park. We will stop in town for some shopping before we enter Kruger at the Phalaborwa Gate.

We will then take a slow drive through the park towards our first camp, Letaba. Along the way we will drive through Mopani and Bushwillow woodlands, this is a good area to find huge elephants and old buffalo. We will arrive at Letaba at around 2:00pm, we will then check in, offload the vehicle and enjoy lunch, after this we will venture out for an exciting afternoon drive.

Letaba is one of our favourite camps in Kruger and is built on the banks of the Letaba River. Views of the river from the camp are fantastic and many hours can be spent gazing out over the vast sandy banks. At Letaba there is a Park Shop with souvenirs and gifts, a swimming pool, restaurant and The Great Elephant Hall, a museum dedicated to the biggest elephants in the history of Kruger National Park. We will be staying at Letaba camp for the next 2 nights and you will be staying in traditional round thatched African huts called a Rondawel, inside there are 2 single beds, a ceiling fan, air conditioning, a private washroom with shower and toilet, a fridge and a small patio to relax and enjoy the surroundings.

Tonight we will prepare and enjoy a traditional South African dinner cooked over an open fire, then relax and delight in the sounds of the African bush.

Day 3 Kruger National Park. (Satara Rest Camp)

Early this morning we will go out on a short sunrise drive along the Letaba River, this time we will follow the river to the east. This is an area where a large pride of lion live, they are shy but we have found them many times in the past. We will return to camp for a hearty breakfast after which we pack up and head further South on our way to our next camp, Satara.

On the way to Satara we pass through open savannah grasslands, the area is great for big herds of grazing animals such as Zebra and Wildebeest. When we arrive at Satara we will check in and prepare lunch, then there is time to relax before we head out on an afternoon drive in the area.

Satara is located in the grasslands of Kruger, this attracts many grazing animals to the area. It is an excellent area for viewing the wildlife and there is a waterhole just outside the camp where you can spot animals whilst at camp. We will be staying at Satara for one night and you will be staying in traditional round thatched African huts called Rondawel. Inside there are 2 single beds, a ceiling fan, a private washroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning, a fridge and a small patio to relax and enjoy camp life.
Tonight dinner is own expense at the camp restaurant and then you will get to go on a night drive in search of some of the nocturnal animals and hopefully get to see some of the big cats on the hunt. Please note that this night drive is shared by other guests in the park and is with a trained Kruger ranger.

Day 4 Kruger National Park. (Skukuza Rest Camp)

Early this morning we will meet for a cup of coffee and then head out for an adventure in the Satara area. The open grasslands found here are perfect habitat for Cheetah, we will do our best this morning to find one of these magnificent big cats.

We will return to camp for breakfast, then we will pack up and leave Satara. It is a 90km drive to our next camp, Skukuza, along the way we will pass areas that are very good for spotting lion and we will stop at 2 postcard water points that are famous for attracting many species of animals at the same time.

We will get to Skukuza at around 1pm and we will drop you down by the picturesque Sabie River to enjoy an own expense lunch at the camp restaurant. Skukuza is the largest camp in Kruger and is the administrative capital of the park. The camp has been built along the banks of the famous Sabie River and has many beautiful riverine forest trees throughout the camp. You will be sleeping in traditional African thatched huts called Rondawels, inside there are twin beds, a private washroom with shower and toilet, a ceiling fan, fridge, air conditioning and a small patio.

After lunch you can have some time to relax and make use of the camp facilities. There is a swimming pool, a big Park Shop with different souvenirs and curios, a museum, a Wi-Fi hotspot, a beautiful walkway on the safe side of the fence along the Sabie River and many benches to sit and enjoy the views.

This afternoon we will venture out in the Skukuza area and see what we can find. The area is very good for lion spotting, there are lion territories are set up in many places around Skukuza, there is a pride we know that has 20 members and we will go out in search of this group.

Tonight we will serve dinner under the stars in our make shift bush restaurant.

Day 5 Kruger National Park. (Berg en Dal Rest Camp)

Today you will have the opportunity to enjoy a guided bush walk in the wild and untamed Kruger National Park. You will be taken out with a trained Kruger ranger where he/she will teach you more about the bush and tracking the different animals, it is a chance to see and experience things that you cannot see easily from a vehicle.

After your return we will have breakfast, pack up and head further south to Berg en Dal. We will be staying at Berg en Dal for the last 2 nights of the safari. You will be staying in Traditional African chalets, the chalets have a thatched roof, twin beds, private wash room with toilet and shower, small kitchen and a small patio area to sit and relax.
Berg en Dal is in a mountainous area of Kruger National park and this provides a beautifully scenic backdrop to all photo`s. The area receives the highest rainfall of Kruger national Park and this in turn allows for stunning riverine forests to grow along the rivers. It is the perfect area for elephant and leopard and the area boasts the highest concentration of Rhino in the park.

This afternoon we will take you out on a safari drive in search for some amazing animals that live in the Berg en Dal area. This will be a very exciting time for you and we hope to find something special this afternoon.
We will return to camp at sunset, start preparing dinner and enjoy the sounds of the African bush by the warm fire.

Day 6 Kruger National Park. (Berg en Dal Rest Camp)

Today we will meet for some coffee early in the morning and then go out for a sunrise safari drive, we will follow the winding rivers as they head east and we will search the lower branches of the giant trees for any resting or feeding leopards. We also hope to see some elephant and white rhino and if we are very lucky we could spot a rare black rhino in this area. We will stop at a picnic site to enjoy breakfast in the bush and return to camp in the late morning.

We will have lunch back at camp and allow for sufficient time to enjoy the camp facilities before we go out for one last afternoon drive. The camp facilities include a swimming pool, small souvenir shop, a waterhole and a self-guided walking trail.

On this afternoon`s drive we expect the African wilderness to reveal itself in true majestic style as this part of Kruger is teeming with life! Upon our return to camp we will light the fire and enjoy the surroundings we are in. Dinner tonight will again be cooked over the fire while we listen to the sounds of nature and look back on the Kruger portion of your safari.

Day 7: Hluhluwe National Park (Hilltop Rest Camp)

Today we are up and packed to go just after the sun rises. Our journey today will take us through the Kingdom of Swaziland. A small landlocked country inside South Africa’s border. We travel by huge sugar cane plantations and through the Royal Hlane game reserve back toward South Africa. We exit Swaziland into Zululand the cultural heartland of South Africa and home of the Zulu’s. The area is lush, green and mountainous. We will pass by many game reserves and the drive is beautiful.

Hluhluwe National Park is the most beautiful park in the country, it is situated in the rolling Zululand hills and provides amazing photographic moments. We will stop at crafts market today for any African gifts you may want to buy. Once the shopping is done, we will enter the park and drive up the winding hills to our lodge, Hilltop.

You will be sleeping in Traditional Round thatched African huts called a Rondawel. Inside there is a wash basin, ceiling fan, air conditioning and a fridge. Toilet and showers are in a communal ablution block. There is a swimming pool, large shop, bar, restaurant and unparalleled viewpoints. We will be having dinner at the restaurant tonight and take some time to recharge.

Day 8: Hluhluwe National Park (Mpila Rest Camp)

We have a relaxed morning today with breakfast at 8 am, then it’s off to explore the park. Hluhluwe National Park is famous for its Save the Rhino Campaign in which the conservationists working here managed to save the black and white rhino from the brink of extinction. The park provides excellent opportunities to view these animals amidst amazing backdrops. There are also many of the lesser seen antelope species like nyala and we will try to find some big herds of buffalo and elephant.

After lunch, we cross through the park and will enter Imfolozi. This is the western section of the park; it is lined with thick jungle like forests flowing over the surrounding hills. Hopefully we find a leopard in this area. Tonight we will stay at Mpila and enjoy another good night’s rest in the comfortable accommodation at the lodge. Tonight you will be sleeping in luxury safari tents, inside there is electricity, 2 beds, a private bathroom with toilet and shower, a fan, a fridge, a small kitchen and a small viewing deck to relax and enjoy the surroundings.

This will be our last night in the territory of the big five and we will take some time to reflect on our experiences over dinner around the fire.

Day 9: Durban (Umdloti Beach)

We will go on one last early morning game drive at sunrise today searching for our favourite animals. We have breakfast when we return back to the lodge and then we will leave the park. There is another big African craft market that we will stop at before we travel towards the south to the amazing beaches of the Dolphin Coast.

It is a 4 hour drive to the beach side just north of Durban, we will be staying at a beach cottage, a short walk from the beach. We will have lunch when we arrive and then go to the biggest shopping mall in the southern hemisphere, The Gateway. Here we will restock all our supplies and you will have some time to do some shopping of your own.

The afternoon will be spent soaking up the sun and enjoying the sound of the waves and warmth of the Indian Ocean. The Indian Ocean in this area has a year round temperature of around 20’C, which is comfortable to swim in or to take a leisurely walk along the beach at sunset.

Day 10: Durban (Umdloti)

Today we will take you to visit Durban and some of the highlights of the city. The first stop will be at the Moses Mabhida stadium. Here we will catch a funicular (optional expense) to the top of the stadium arch, this is where the best views of the city and the beaches can be found. Next we will drive the golden mile, Durban’s famous beachfront, to uShaka Marine World (Optional Expense).

uShaka is the world famous sea world and entertainment area. Here you can enjoy some time at the beach. You can also visit the aquarium that houses many fish that can be found in the Indian Ocean. You will also have time to enjoy lunch at one of the many restaurants found at uShaka. After uShaka we will take you on a drive through the city and back to the cottage in Umdloti. Tonight we will enjoy dinner at another local restaurant.

Day 11: Drakensberg Mountains (Thendele Camp)

Leaving the coast behind us, we travel inland to the Drakensberg Mountains, the largest and highest mountain range in Southern Africa. We take the scenic route through the midlands and will stop at some of the attractions on route, including a very high waterfall, a small brewery, farming stall, and some small art galleries as well as a quaint restaurant for lunch. We will drive through the beautiful scenery and high up into the Drakensberg Mountains to our camp in the Drakensberg World Heritage Site.

We will arrive in the afternoon and have dinner around the fire after we have settled in. We will stay here for 2 nights. You will be sleeping in a 2 bed chalet, inside there is 2 beds, private bathroom with toilet and shower, small kitchen, air conditioning and stunning views of the mountain.

Day 12: Drakensberg Mountains (Thendele Rest Camp)

This morning after breakfast at 7:30 am, we will go on a 4 hour hike in the Drakensberg. We will go to the top of the mountain by our camp and view some ancient rock art galleries. The view from the top of these mountains is breath-taking and seemingly endless. The rolling hills and mountains just look to go on forever. We will have a packed picnic lunch which we will enjoy in the fresh mountain air while our eyes feast on the views.

When we return we will have some time to relax and we could go for another hike in a different area if you’d like, go fly fishing for trout (Optional Expense), go horse riding (Optional Expense), play a game of golf or tennis (Optional Expense), enjoy some bird watching or just enjoy the camp facilities. Tonight dinner will be at our camp and if the sky is clear we will have a look at the different star constellations and planets seen from South Africa.

Day 13: Maluti Mountains (Golden Gate National Park)

This morning we will leave the camp after breakfast and travel further up the mountain range. We will take some time to explore the small mountain towns and visit a vulture feeding site. We will pass the beautiful area known as Little Switzerland and stop at Sterkfontein dam, through to Golden Gate National Park. This park is high in the mountains and has many species of animals we would not have seen. Black wildebeest and mountain zebra are found here. We will stop at a traditional Sotho village (Optional Expense) to give you an idea of how the rural people live in the mountains and to have a look at the African crafts made in this area.

Towards the afternoon we will drive between the towering sandstone cliffs of Golden Gate, these cliffs are astonishing and the colours seem to change constantly between dark red and pale yellow. Our camp tonight will be directly under one of these amazing rock formations, we plan to arrive in time to climb to the top, enjoy a drink and view the sunset. Tonight you will be sleeping in a 2 bed Traditional Rondawel.

Day 14: Johannesburg

After a relaxed start to the day, we pack up and head back to Johannesburg. We will stop in some very unique, art infused towns such as Clarens and enjoy lunch en route. Late in the afternoon we will arrive in Johannesburg and we will drop you off at the airport for your flight home or we can drop you at your hotel in Johannesburg.
